Vancouver and Okanagan International Undergraduate proposal
In 1996, the Board of Governors created the International Student Initiative (ISI) to increase the enrolment of international undergraduate students based on a tuition assessment that would cover the full costs of delivering an undergraduate education.
Based on this model, UBC could admit more qualified international students without displacing domestic students, who were funded through the provincial grant and domestic tuition. The goal for international undergraduate student enrolment is 15% of UBC undergraduate enrolment.
Since ISI was created, international undergraduate enrolment has increased steadily, accruing benefits to both domestic and international students.
