Dear Parents,

Welcome to the University of British Columbia. As your children take this vital next step in their life's journey, I hope that you will enthusiastically support their decision to come to UBC.

The first year of university is undoubtedly an exciting time for your children as they encounter new ideas, explore new possibilities, and acquire the knowledge and skills they will need to become the leaders of tomorrow. At this very crucial stage, your support is essential if they are to make a successful transition to university life and attain their educational goals. Within a few years, these young people will have become well educated global citizens who are fully prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world, and ready to make their own contributions towards the improvement of our society.

UBC's Parent Orientation will inform you of the numerous opportunities available to our students and the different paths they can follow to achieve their ambitions. This event is designed to provide you with a wealth of information about UBC's many educational options and student services and to bring you into direct contact with current students, faculty, and staff who have first-hand knowledge of what UBC has to offer. It's an excellent opportunity to find out more about the first-year experience, the quality of campus residences, and the kinds of assistance that students can count on to help them overcome any problems they may encounter in the transition from high school to university.

Your children's time at UBC will bring them intellectual discovery and personal development. I am delighted that they have joined the UBC community, and I look forward to meeting all of you at Parent Orientation 2010.
