Before you arrive

Are you ready for UBC?

Whether you are coming to Canada for the first time or you have lived here before, this checklist will help you prepare for a successful start at UBC.

  1.  Apply for the immigration documents you need to enter and study in Canada.
  2. Consider your housing options: Applications for UBC on-campus housing are due by May 1st.  If you are looking for off-campus housing, the AMS Rentsline website will be helpful.
  3. Pay your deposit and get ready to register: Course registration instructions are available on the Registering for Courses webpage.
  4. If you are taking a first-year English course, prepare to meet the LPI requirement.  Before you can complete a first-year undergraduate English course, you must meet this requirement.  Some students are exempt from the LPI.
  5. Understand your health coverage: You will be automatically enrolled in iMED and the AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan (except exchange students, who are not automatically covered by the plan) when you register for your classes. When you arrive in Canada, you’ll need to apply for BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP).
  6. UBC’s orientation programs will help you make a smooth (and fun) transition to university life.
  7. Apply for child care services: If you need child care services at UBC, apply early, as there are often wait lists.
  8. Bring the essentials: Know what you need during your time at UBC and find out what you’re allowed to bring into Canada.
  9. Adjusting to life in a new country can be challenging (but also rewarding). One important step in ensuring a smooth transition is to know what to expect by preparing for a cultural transition.
Test your knowledge of Canadian immigration, BC health insurance, UBC academics, and other important topics by taking the pre-arrival quiz.
