A cademic English Support
Sign up, provide some diagnostic information then meet with a UBC English language teaching specialist – your English language coach. Your coach will review your information and have a draft learning plan ready for you to discuss, and agree on priorities.
The Plan will include carefully selected self-study websites and/or short, focused courses, mostly online. Your coach will check in on your progress through the plan and give you some individual coaching where needed. Find out more at www.aes.ubc.ca.
L anguage Proficiency Index (LPI)
To complete a first-year English course, you must pass the LPI exam or be exempt from taking it. Many UBC undergraduate programs require students to complete at least three credits of first-year English. This requirement does not apply to exchange students.
You may register in a first-year English course before you complete the LPI requirement. But to remain registered, you must complete the LPI exam and score a level 5 (30/40) or higher.
Students who do not complete their LPI and English requirements within a certain number of credits may not be able to register in required courses. For information on LPI exemptions and deadlines, visit the Department of English website.
If you have trouble passing the LPI, contact your faculty advising office.

Writing 098
If you score less than a level 5 on the essay section of the LPI exam, you may not be permitted to register in a full course load until your English ability improves. The UBC Writing Centre offers Writing 098 (WRIT 098), a composition and grammar course that prepares students for university-level writing and for the LPI exam.
If you complete this course, you will receive an extended LPI deadline and priority on wait-lists for first-year English courses.
