UBC Global Fund Guidelines

 

Description

The UBC Global Fund provides small grants (typically up to $2,000) to currently enrolled UBC V students to fund student-led initiatives, projects or events that focus on international engagement, intercultural understanding, sustainability and collaboration and have a connection with the Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge & Resource Centre (Global Lounge). Grant recipients will be required to provide a Global Fund Final Report with photo with permission for the University to use the report and photo on the website or promotional material for the grant program. Recipients will further be expected to present at the Global Lounge about their experiences.  The report must be completed within one month of project completion.

Any currently enrolled UBC Vancouver students.

Amount

Grants will be awarded typically up to $2,000. For amounts over $2,000, organizations should provide a special rationale in the project description on the application form.

Guidelines

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • International engagement and/or intercultural understanding – applications must involve people, locations, or content that are internationally or interculturally focused
  • Sustainability – preference will be given to applications that demonstrate long-term impact
  • Collaboration & Engagement – applications must involve collaboration across UBC faculties, programs, clubs/organizations and engage students across the UBC campus.  Community partnerships are also applicable.
  • Global Lounge – preference will be given to applications whose initiatives, projects or events take place or involve the Global Lounge and its members.

Deadlines

Applications are due on the third Monday of every month 

Summer 2012:  May 22 (due to Victoria Day on May 21), June 18, July 16, August 20  

Applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event. Notification will be given within two weeks of submission.

Applications may be accepted between deadlines in special situations; contact woo.kim@ubc.ca if your situation is urgent.

Review Process

Submissions will be accepted through the Global Lounge. The review committee will be comprised of 6-7 students, staff, and faculty members for a one year term, including representatives from:

-          The Global Lounge Network Representative (2-3)

-          International Students Association Representative (1)

-          AMS International Commissioner (1)

-          Student Development and Services staff (1)

-          Additional staff or faculty member (1)

The committee will review submissions monthly according to a review rubric.

The application includes:

  • a request for a brief description of the project;
  • how it meets the guidelines of the Global Fund;
  • a draft budget.

Allocation

Awards will be made available by cheque within three weeks of notification of award.

Conditions of Funding

Projects should aim to engage all UBC students.

Funding shall not be used for personal gain of individuals or to fund an organization’s ongoing operational or core expenses.

The Global Fund does not fund projects or activities that are in any way a part of or extension of the academic curriculum at UBC, such as field trips or research integral to an academic program.

All projects that include international travel must comply with the UBC Student Safety Abroad Policy.

The successful applicant agrees that that University of British Columbia shall not be liable for any incidental, indirect, special or consequential damages that arise out of or in any way related to the funded initiative.

All funds must be used in an ethical manner.  Initiatives need to demonstrate accountability and an overall investment into building and maintaining intercultural and international relationships and partnerships.  For more information about ethical considerations, please go to: www.ethicsofisl.ubc.ca.

Funds must be used for the purpose for which they were requested. The Global Fund Review Committee reserves the right to to request the return of the grant or refuse future funding for groups that use the funding inappropriately.

The successful applicant must acknowledge the support received from the “UBC Global Fund” in any publications or materials related to the project.

NOTE:  An organization may NOT apply for/receive more than one grant per fiscal year to a maximum of $2000.
