English language classes

Our courses are taught by skilled instructors and are very popular, so sign up early! Beginners to Advanced ESL classes are provided for UBC students, visiting scholars, and their spouses/partners by our volunteer instructors.

Classes focus on building vocabulary, improving speaking skills, and learning about Canadian culture. Classes are organized by I. House for each of the three terms per year (January to April, May to August, and September to December). The cost is $60 per class. All payments must be made in cash.

January classes begin the week of January 16th, 2012 and run for 10 weeks until the week of March 26th, 2012.

Classes for the January to April term:

1) Mondays: 2:30-4:00pm

Healthy Conversation: An ESL Winter Survival Guide (Intermediate)

Looking for an ESL class that will help your improve your English, beat the winter blues and make new friends? This is the class for you! Practice speaking and listening while learning fun activities like yoga, skating, healthy nutrition and stress management.

2) Tuesdays: 2:00-3:30pm

Chit-Chat for Beginners (Beginner)

Improve your basic English conversation and grammar skills in this fun beginner ESL class. Topics include interviews, giving directions, phone conversation and ordering food.

3) Wednesdays: 2:00-3:30pm

Canadian Conversation (Advanced)

Practice your English conversation skills, grammar and improve your confidence. In this class you will watch and discuss Canadian films, TV shows and music.

4) Wednesdays: 3:30-5:00pm

Speaking Canadian: Part 2 (Intermediate)

This is the continuation of our popular conversation class. Using Canadian expressions, learn how to speak comfortably in past, present and future tenses in different social situations. Plus, reduce your accent and sound more like a Canadian, eh?

5) Thursdays, 3:30-5:00pm

Advanced Conversation and Writing (Advanced)

This class is perfect for ESL students wanting to improve their writing and English conversation skills. You will practice writing academically and informally, while also gaining confidence speaking formally and informally.
