Navigating Health Care at UBC
Navigating Health Care at UBC
Welcome to UBC; we are here to help you have a safe, healthy and productive experience. University life can be intense and fast moving, good health is essential to your success. While you are at UBC you may require health care: here is how to navigate the health care system while at UBC.
Student Health Service (SHS) operates a clinic on the main floor of UBC Hospital. All students are eligible to use SHS as your family physician while at UBC: we offer full primary care, meaning assessment and treatment of all acute and chronic conditions as well as preventive care: such as pap smears, contraception and STD screening. If you require specialist care we offer timely referrals. Many diagnostic tests are scheduled right at UBC Hospital making it possible for most students to receive all their health care right on campus.
Minor injuries and illnesses can be treated at SHS during the weekday. If you are ill in the evening or the weekend and cannot wait until SHS is open again the Urgent Care Centre at UBC Hospital is open until 10 pm every day. If the illness is life threatening an ambulance should be called (911) and you will be transported to the appropriate setting.
If you experience a minor injury or illness after 10 pm you can chose to wait until SHS or the Urgent Care Centre open again or you may go to the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department, located at 920 West 10th Avenue, for care at night.
Maternity and child health is available on campus at the UBC Health CLinic: 310-5950 University Boulevard.
Visit the Wellness Centre in the Student Union Building for information about various aspects of health and wellness. The Coordinator and Wellness (WIN) Peer Educators are available to discuss your health information needs and steer you in the right direction.
You can also access a wealth of information on our website: www.students.ubc.ca/health.
Take time to care for yourself; your success at University depends on your good health!
