Program structure

At its core, International Service Learning (ISL) at UBC focuses on reciprocity between the community organization, UBC, and you. All of our programs give you first-hand experience in international community development work. To foster critical thinking and learning, we emphasize reflection to make help you make connections between your hands-on experience and academic theory. To ensure you’re well supported, our program and staff engage you before, during and after your international placement through:

  1. Pre-departure Learning Program

    Program orientation
    Pre-departure learning sessions taking place over the academic term leading up to departure
    Creation of a learning and development plan, reviewed with an ISL Advisor
    Participant-led events/ presentations
    Facilitated meetings with your placement team to explore learning topics

  2. During international placements

    Placement and region orientation
    A volunteer placement (based on your program’s learning theme) with one of our community partners
    An in-session workshop facilitated by UBC staff or local representatives

  3. Post-placement

    Group debrief and reflection session(s)
    Presentation of learning experience at a public engagement event
    Opportunities to contribute to pre-departure learning sessions for future participants through the ISL Student Leadership Team & one time volunteer activities
