Exploring Forestry & Conservation in China

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program is a four-week intensive program offered through Nanjing Forestry University (NFU) and led and coordinated by the UBC Faculty of Forestry. It is a unique opportunity for students interested in forestry and conservation in China. This program will allow you to better understand local and global forestry issues in China through various activities, including in-class lectures/seminars, service learning, field trips in nature reserves, and visits to local industries as well as heritage and cultural sites.

Program Content:

  1. Integration of forestry, conservation and wood marketing experience in China
  2. Current development of Chinese forestry and wood industry
  3. Nature conservation and biodiversity protection in global hotspots and the World Natural and Cultural Heritage sites
  4. Comparison between Canada and China of locals' livelihood, poverty reduction strategies, and prosperity of community associated with forestry lands
  5. Culture and language exposure

Enrollment is limited to 20 participants.

Eligibility

  • Third year student or higher at time of the program
  • Preferably enrolled in Faculty of Forestry (All faculties are welcome to apply)
  • Committed to the learning theme and goals of the program
  • Demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and willingness to live and travel in less comfortable conditions

Language of instruction

English. Previous Mandarin study would be helpful, but is not required.

Term offered

May 6-June 2, 2012

Academics

There will be two courses offered, each worth three credits:

  • CONS 449 Directed Studies: International Experience in Chinese Conservation
  • FRST 449 Directed Studies: Contemporary Chinese Forestry

To participate in the program you have to take both courses. Neither course has prerequisites.

Accommodations

You will be lodged in dorm style accommodations, with two to three students per room. You will be required to stay with the group at the lodgings.

 

Program fee

The program fee will be $2,000-$2,300 (final fee dependent on number of students and final budget decisions) and includes:

  • Accommodations
  • Three meals per day
  • In-country transportation
  • Field trips and cultural activities
  • $371 Go Global Fee

Not included:

  • Round-trip air tickets to China
  • UBC tuition for six credits
  • Immunizations
  • Visas
  • Health or travel insurance
  • Personal spending money for snacks, souvenirs, phone calls, etc.

*You will also need some spending money for snacks, souvenirs, phone calls, Internet, and personal travel.

NOTE:  The Program fee will be reduced by $1,000 for UBC students qualifying for the Go Global Award (i.e.,  students with a 70% average over 24 credits during the 2011-2012 academic year).
