Eligibility

The following are the eligibility requirements to participate in a Go Global Exchange program. Please read through them carefully, and don't hesitate to visit an Exchange advisor during drop-in advising hours if you have any questions or concerns.

Undergraduate and Law students:
Grades & standing
  • You must have at least a 70% average in your last 15 credits prior to submitting your application (Law students must have a cumulative average of 70%).
  • You need to be a UBC student in good standing (e.g. not be under academic or non-academic discipline).

These criteria are set to ensure that you'll be prepared to thrive academically while on Exchange. We do consider exceptions - if your average is below this standard but you're able to prove your academic readiness, see below for appeals.

Academic year level
  • You must have completed 30 credits at UBC prior to going on Exchange.
  • You should have full-time student status (as defined by your faculty) in the year prior to your Exchange.
  • You must have third- or fourth-year standing during your Exchange.
  • Arts students: you can go on Exchange in your second year, but you have to complete your Writing Requirement and 30 UBC credits before you actually go on Exchange (not before you apply).
  • Law students: you must have second- or third-year standing during your Exchange.
  • Law: if you're a transfer student, you can only go on Exchange for one term.
English/Writing Requirements
  • You need to complete the English/LPI or Writing Requirement as required by your faculty prior to going on Exchange.
Academic accommodation
  • Please speak to your regional Exchange advisor six weeks prior to applying if you require academic or other accommodations abroad.
Not eligible for Exchange

You're not eligible to go on Exchange if you:

  • won’t be coming back to UBC for at least one Term (you can appeal this requirement by meeting with an Exchange advisor)
  • are a transfer student who hasn't completed 30 credits at UBC
  • are a visiting student
  • are a Law student pursuing an Exchange in which tuition is paid directly to the partner institution
  • are a Master of Business Administration (MBA) student - please apply through the Sauder Exchange program
  • have already done an Exchange (you can find more info about this on our FAQ page)
Appeals to eligibility
  • You must obtain an appeal form in person from your Exchange advisor. Appeal forms are available until one week before the application deadline. If you don't seek prior approval, you won't be considered for an appeal.

Graduate students:
Approval
  • Once accepted and matched to your partner institution, you will need to get approval of your study plan and written permission from your supervisor before you go on Exchange (note: graduate students have priority in matching to a partner university).
Standing
  • You need to be a UBC student in good standing.
Credit
  • To ensure that the courses you take abroad will transfer to your program, you need to get them approved (in writing and prior to going on Exchange) from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and your department.
  • You can't transfer more than 12 credits from the host institution to your program.
Research
  • You have to identify a sponsor at the host university.

More information on conducting research abroad.

Academic accommodation
  • Please speak to your regional Exchange advisor six weeks prior to applying if you require academic or other accommodations abroad.
