Initiating a program with Go Global

Initiate a Student Mobility Agreement

Student mobility agreements make international learning opportunities possible by either exchanging students with selected universities or making arrangements with partner institutions to welcome UBC students into their programs.

Agreements allow UBC students to access study opportunities at renowned universities around the world without having to pay international student fees.

Prior to exchanging students, universities must reach an official agreement. Go Global consults with participating academic units and the Office of UBC International on all student mobility projects. All reciprocal student mobility agreements are taken to the UBC Senate for final approval.

Requests for consideration of a particular partner organization can be initiated by academic units or in some cases students; otherwise, partnerships are developed in accordance with UBC strategic priorities. Agreements can be university-wide, or faculty- or discipline-based.

A student mobility agreement must:

  • provide a complementary or value-added academic component to UBC programs of study,
  • be negotiated with a peer institution that supports international student experiences and that meets the academic scrutiny of the participating faculty and the University Senate,
  • have the potential for reciprocity when the agreement is two-way.

When a student mobility agreement is signed, UBC agrees to transfer all course work successfully completed at the partner institution to the academic records of UBC exchange students. For a current list of existing and pending agreements, as well as those under review, please review UBC's list of partner universities.

Initiate a Group Study Program

Group Study Programs (GSP) offer UBC faculty members a chance to “move the classroom” to a location that deepens students’ learning opportunities. The course’s international location and activities are essential to student learning goals. A GSP typically involves one to two courses, and in total offers six to nine credits.& In some circumstances, shorter programs may offer three credits. GSPs are typically led by one to two UBC faculty members, sometimes in partnership with colleagues from a UBC partner university in the GSP international location.

GSPs are developed in partnership with individual faculty members, the Go Global Group Study Program staff, as well as the faculty members’ Department Head and Dean. To learn more about developing a GSP contact the Group Study Program Manager.

We strongly encourage you to be in touch with us to collaboratively build your program.

Application deadline

The deadline for proposals for programs taking place between April 2013 and March 2014 is July 1, 2012.

Initiate an International Service Learning opportunity

International Service Learning uses the experiential education model; students engage in a continuous cycle of learning, action, and reflection. Projects focus on global issues, social justice, and reciprocal learning. Programs are developed together with community partners who contribute as co-educators throughout the project cycle.

Faculties and departments interested in adding an international service learning component to their course should contact us directly.

Submit an International Service Learning Program proposal.

We strongly encourage you to be in touch with us to collaboratively build your program.

Arts Research Course Abroad Award Program (ARCAAP) funding

The Arts Research Course Abroad Award Program (ARCAAP) aims to ensure that upper-level international research courses are accessible to academically qualified students, and that scholarly preparation and aspiration rather than financial means become the deciding factors for student participation. Funding offsets up to 70% of the cost to students to participate, and in cases of demonstrated financial need (determined by Students Financial Assistance and Awards), 100% of the program costs for a student can be covered.

ARCAAP sponsors two types of courses:

Option 1: Advanced Research Group Study Program. Courses must be designated as an Advanced Research Course for the major. The course’s international location and activities are essential to the research and student learning goals.

Option 2: Advanced Research International Service Learning Program. The research and service aspects of the course are closely linked, with academic preparation being essential to the international service.
