Studying Commerce

Go Global has a limited number of spaces for students wishing to study commerce at UBC. Students from universities with commerce exchange agreements can check with their universities for information on available exchange spaces at UBC.

Undergraduate program structure

Year one: Consists of calculus, micro- and macroeconomics, English, and electives.

Year two: Consists of a pre-set group of second-year commerce and elective courses.

Year three: Consists of a pre-set group of third-year commerce courses, option (or major) courses, and electives.

Year four: Students further their commerce and option studies and complete additional electives.

Course enrolment information

  • Students accepted to commerce from partner universities that have a commerce exchange agreement will be allowed a maximum of four commerce courses per term (additional commerce courses may be considered if space is available).
  • Students accepted to commerce from other partner universities will be allowed a maximum of two commerce courses per term (additional commerce courses may be considered if space is available).
  • Students not on exchange in commerce may request to take commerce courses (requests will be considered if space is available).
  • Enrolment in second-year courses (200-level) may be limited.
  • Exchange students may study third- and fourth-year courses (300- and 400-level).
  • Many courses have additional prerequisites that must be met prior to course enrolment. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that these prerequisites are met.
  • Graduate commerce courses (500-level) are closed to exchange students.
  • The following are commerce courses for non-commerce majors: COMM 329/398/457/458/465/473 and 493. These do not count towards the maximum course limits listed above.
  • It is the student's responsibility to ensure that he/she meets required prerequisites.
  • Many commerce courses are in high demand; students may be refused enrolment due to capacity limitations.
  • At UBC Economics is within the Faculty of Arts and is separate from the Sauder School of Business and Bachelor of Commerce program. Due to limited capacity, access to Economics courses cannot be guaranteed.
