Course Terminology
Co-requisites
- A co-requisite is a course that should be taken either prior to, or, concurrently with another course. The co-requisite is not required to register in a course but the department strongly recommends that the courses be taken at the same time.
Pre-requisites
- A pre-requisite is a course you must successfully complete prior to registering in another course. Course descriptions show pre-requisites where applicable.
Section
- Each course will have one or more sections. A section is the particular class you register in. Characteristics of a section include the time, place, and term it is taught and the professor that teaches it. Each section has enrolment limits, so some sections might be full, while others might be available. Sections are identified by the numbers that follow the course number.
For example, ENG 110, 001 refers to English 110, section number 001. Evening sections are usually given a 900 level section number. Labs and tutorials are usually given section numbers that start with LA and T respectively.
Blocked
- Must see department to register. Students typically require a special skill or proficiency in order to register in this course or sections, and must, for example, submit a portfolio or manuscript, complete an audition or interview, or demonstrate proficiency in a specific language.
Unreleased
- The section is not open for registration at this time, but may be opened depending on enrolment demand and/or instructor availability.RestrictedOnly restricted seats exist or remain available. Such restrictions could include year, faculty, program, or grade. In some case a portion of the seats are reserved so that students who require this course to complete their program can register. In other cases, an entire course is restricted because students can only take it if they are in a specific program.
