Policy on financial support
UBC is strongly committed to ensuring accessibility for domestic students.
- talking with your family about support
- applying for government student loans
- demonstrating financial need
- meeting deadlines for funding programs
- ensuring you are taking the minimum number of courses required for support
- maintaining a good credit history
What support is available for my program?
The types of support you can access depends on your course of study. Types of support include:
- repayable funding, such as government student loans, commercial loans or lines of credit from private financial institutions
- non-repayable funding, such as bursaries
- wage subsidy programs, such as Work Study
To find out what support is available for your program, choose your program from the menu below
If your program does not appear in the above list, please contact Student Financial Assistance & Awards.
How much support will I receive?
UBC determines how much support is given to you by calculating your assessed financial need, the difference between your costs and your resources.
Our calculation considers educational costs and standard allowances for living expenses to determine the total cost of study. We’ll compare this against your personal resources (including scholarships). If you are considered a dependent student, we will also consider your family’s resources.
Policy flexibility
Not every student's financial situation fits within our set of rules. That's why
- financial emergencies for all students, including international students
- instances when the standard assessment method does not realistically reflect a student's situation
Please bring exceptional cases to the attention of Student Financial Assistance & Awards so they can be addressed promptly.
