Students with previous loans

At the start of each school year, students with previous loans must inform their lenders that they have returned to study in order to avoid entering repayment.

Your lenders will automatically be notified of your return to study if:

  • you are applying for a new student loan
  • you will receive your funding before you enter repayment
  • you are applying to the same province, lender, or loan program as last year

If you are not returning to school full-time, you will enter repayment six months after your full-time study program has ended.

If you are returning to part-time study and were previously a full-time student, you will enter repayment six months after leaving full-time study.

To determine if you are a part-time or full-time student, please consult our Full-Time Course Load Guide.

Canadian students with previous full-time loans

Students with previous Canadian and provincial loans must notify their lenders that they have returned to full-time study. If you do not notify your lenders, your loans will begin to accrue interest and you will enter repayment.

Once you notify your lender that you have returned to full-time study, you will be approved for interest-free status. During the approved study period you will not accrue interest and you are not required to make payments.

How do I notify my lenders that I’ve returned to full-time study?

Students from BC

Complete an online application for interest-free status. This application will notify your federal lender, provincial lender, and pre-2000 lender (if applicable).

Students from other provinces

Apply for Interest-free status by completing the required forms at Student Financial Assistance & Awards. We can help you determine the forms that you need to submit. Please inform us if you have loans from multiple provinces.

When should I notify my lenders?

Notify your lenders as soon as possible for each new eligible study period.

The earliest date that you can update your full-time status for the new school year is 26 days before classes start, except:

  • Alberta students can notify their lender 30 days before classes start
  • Ontario students cannot notify their lender until the first day of classes

Canadian students with previous part-time loans

Students with previous part-time loans must notify their lender that they have returned to either part-time or full-time study. If you do not notify your lender, you will enter repayment.

How do I notify my lender that I’ve returned to school?

If you are not taking out a new student loan

Complete a Schedule 2 (Confirmation of Enrolment) form at Student Financial Assistance & Awards.

This form indicates your return to either full-time or part-time study so that you will not enter repayment for your previous part-time loans.

If you are taking out a new part-time or full-time student loan

  • Register in an eligible course load
  • Cash your new loan before you enter repayment

Your lender will automatically be notified of your return to study when you cash your part-time or full-time funding, and you will not enter repayment for your previous part-time loans.

US Students

Students with previous US loans must notify their lender that they have returned to school. If you do not notify your lender, your loans will begin to accrue interest and you will enter repayment.

How do I notify my lender that I’ve returned to school?

UBC can inform your lender(s) that you've returned to school electronically via the National Student Clearinghouse, a non-profit third party agency that is responsible for updating US lenders with US students' enrolment records.

  • Email usloans.inquiry@ubc.ca.
  • Ask us to submit your current enrolment information to your US lenders.
  • Include your US Social Security Number in the email.*

*Without your SSN we are not able to add you to the Clearinghouse list. If you would rather not provide this number by email, please make your request by contacting Student Financial Assistance & Awards by phone or in-person.

Once we submit this update, you will be on a report that UBC completes twice per year (October and March) for the National Student Clearinghouse. You will not need to manually request an enrolment update again, unless you cease to be a full-time student at UBC for a semester or more.

Do I qualify for In-school Deferment?

If you are registered in at least a half-time course load, then you are eligible for In-School Deferment for your current study period.

To determine if you are studying in at least a half-time course load, please consult the Full-Time Courseload Guide or contact Student Financial Assistance & Awards.
