Students in part-time study

StudentAid BC offers funding for students attending part-time studies in British Columbia. Unlike full-time funding programs, you do not need to apply through your home province.

Part-time funding is best for students who:

  • need support for educational expenses (e.g., tuition, books, transportation)
  • must pay for child care while attending school
  • have permanent disabilities (although some students with disabilities qualify for the full-time program by appealing to study at a reduced course load).

Part-time funding does not cover living costs. If you require additional financial support for living costs, please contact us to discuss your financial plan.

Am I a part-time student?

To determine whether you are a part-time student, please consult the Course Load Guide. If you are registered in 20 - 59% of the full-time course load listed for your program, you are considered a part-time student.

Please note that not all programs are eligible for part-time funding.  Students must be in a program of study approved for full-time student loans. Please contact Student Financial Assistance & Awards to check if your program is approved.

How do I apply?

Download the application form from StudentAid BC. Submit the completed application form to Student Financial Assistance & Awards.

What happens next?

You will receive an assessment from StudentAid BC. This assessment will tell you how much and what type of funding you will receive, and when you will receive it.

Your funding will be sent to you by loan document once your enrolment has been confirmed by UBC.

Am I eligible for bursary or work study?

Part-time students are not eligible for the UBC bursary or work study programs.

If you have previous part-time loans

If you have a previous part-time Canada Student Loan and you are returning to either part- or full-time study, you do not need to begin repayment. But you must inform your lender that you are returning to study. Please review the information for students with previous loans.
