Students outside BC

Students from a province or territory other than BC are eligible to receive government student loan assistance, but they must apply through their home province. Students enrolled in part-time studies can apply through StudentAid BC

Determining your home province

Your home province is generally the province where you lived before attending UBC. However, this rule depends on whether you are a dependent or an independent student.

Dependent students

Your home province is determined by where your parents have last lived for 12 consecutive months.

Independent students

  • If you have left full-time study for the past two years, your home province is the last place that you lived for at least 12 months.
  • If you have not left full-time study for more than two years, then your home province is where your parent(s) or guardian(s) lived.

How do I know if I'm a dependent or an independent student?

Dependent students are those who have completed high school less than four years ago as of the first day of classes. Independent students have completed high school more than four years ago as of the first day of classes or spent two full years outside of full-time study (e.g., working).
