Medicine

Tuition & fees
Understanding your costs is essential to building a successful financial plan for a degree in Medicine. A great place to start your planning is by researching your tuition, student fees, and living costs. The Faculty of Medicine provides sample budgets and other information to help you get started with your financial plan.
- Tuition, student fees, and other program costs for your MD program.
- Living costs: Whether you are a single student or are a student with a family, living costs are your largest educational expenses and are often the hardest to plan for. Take a look at general guidelines and cost estimates and see how your current living costs compare.

Types of financial support
Scholarships & awards
Scholarships and awards recognize outstanding entering and continuing MD students and are administered by the Faculty of Medicine.
MD students may also apply for:
- Affiliation Awards
- Awards for Aboriginal Students
- Awards for Students with Disabilities
- Premier Undergraduate & Wesbrook Scholarships
Bursaries
MD students are eligible to apply for UBC Bursaries.
Bursary support will not cover all of your unmet need and bursary award amounts may vary each year. Bursary amounts depend on the number of eligible applicants in your program, total unmet need of applicants and available bursary support for that year.
Applications are open from August 15 to September 15. To apply, log on to the Student Service Centre.
Important reminders if you are:
- studying in the Northern, Island, or Southern medical programs, please remember to complete a Cheque Forwarding Request Form (63KB PDF) to have any bursary cheques sent to you from our office.
- in your third year of the MD program, your bursary funding will most likely be less than previous years due to stipend earnings and your study period extending over three terms.
Student loans
Full-time MD students are eligible to apply for government student loans.
Government student loans are provided to supplement your own resources and will not be sufficient to cover all of your costs for the MD program.
MD students applying for student loan funding from provinces other than BC are recommended to submit their loan applications by the end of June each year to have funding in place for September.
Do you have previous loans?
If you are attending full-time studies, have previous government student loans, and are not taking out new student loans this year, you must inform your lenders that you are back in school to keep your loans out of repayment.
- Medical Resident (MRES) students with past Alberta student loans are eligible to have their previous loans put into interest free and payment free status
- Loans from any other province are not eligible for interest free status and will enter repayment. Students should contact their lenders to discuss repayment assistance options.
Other funding
To complete your financial plan, you may want to consider a Professional Student Line of Credit. Make sure your credit is healthy as this is essential to be approved for your Professional Student Line of Credit. Plan ahead for how you will manage your line of credit spending as it is still debt.
