Recommended awards

Thanks to the generosity of external donors and UBC faculties, the University is able to offer many awards to undergraduate students after their first year of study. Individual faculties are responsible for recommending their students for these awards.

Student Financial Assistance & Awards will send a list of available awards, scholarships, and prizes to the faculty scholarship representative each year.

How do I submit a recommendation?

Only the faculty scholarship representative may submit award recommendations.

There are two types of recommendation forms:

The Awards Selected by Recommendation form is used for all recommendations except graduating awards.

The Graduating Awards Recommendation form is used for graduating students. We will contact you around each graduation cycle about the process and deadlines for recommendations.

What are the differences among awards? When do I submit my recommendations?

The term "award” is often used to refer to scholarships, prizes, fellowships, and awards.

All recommendations for scholarships, academic awards, and prizes must meet the requirements of the Senate Regulations Governing University Awards.

Factors such as leadership, UBC involvement, and participation on varsity athletic teams may be taken into consideration based on the award and the award description criteria.

Below are definitions and timelines for when to recommend each award type:

Scholarships

  • Awarded at the start of the academic year to recognize the achievements of the previous year.
  • Based on academic achievement, but can also include other non-academic factors such as leadership, UBC or faculty involvement, etc. Appears on student’s transcript.

Prizes

  • Awarded at the end of the year to recognize academics and achievement of the academic year that has just ended. A prize can be a financial award, a book, or a medal.
  • The student does not have to be returning to studies the following year to receive a prize. Prize will appear on student's transcript.

Academic awards

  • Based on academic achievement much like scholarships and prizes. Appear on a student’s transcript.
  • Academic session on which award adjudication is based will depend on if it is being awarded like a scholarship at start of the academic year (consider previous Winter Session) or if awarded like a prize at end of year (consider current Winter Session).

Non-academic awards or service awards

  • Based on non-academic criteria. These awards may recognize achievement or participation in athletics, leadership, UBC or community involvement, just to name a few areas. Will not appear on a student’s transcript.

Bursaries

  • Based on financial need. We are not able to disclose any information to the faculty about a student’s financial need and therefore it can be difficult to recommend a student for a bursary or need-based award. Please contact us if you have questions. Bursaries will not appear on a student’s transcript.
