Student Financial Assistance & Awards works closely with the UBC Development Office to:
- steward donor relations
- ensure that awards are administered in a manner that upholds the donors’ intentions and spirit
- award and disburse funds to students in a timely manner

Search for awards
The Awards search tool helps you find award titles and awards by type, faculty, or student group to see the kinds of awards that are currently available.
Donor support recognition
We greatly appreciate and value the donations made in support of scholarships, bursaries, awards, and prizes and we hope the recipients of your support are equally as appreciative.
All students receiving an award, bursary, scholarship, or prize that has been provided by donor support are given the donor contact information, when available for release, and a reminder to send a thank you note to show their gratitude, tell you a little about themselves, and share what your support means.
Ways to give
Student Financial Assistance & Awards is responsible for the ongoing administration of awards once they have been established and approved by UBC Senate. Our office does not deal directly with donors or the handling of donations.
When are scholarships, bursaries, awards, and prizes awarded to students?
Our offices actively works with faculties and UBC Development office to try and ensure that all available donor funded scholarships, bursaries, prizes, and awards are awarded each academic year to eligible students. Your gift is awarded differently, depending on what type of gift you support.
Scholarships and awards
- Scholarships and awards are awarded starting in late August for the upcoming September academic year. Awards continue to be assigned throughout the academic year.
- Notifications are regularly sent to our faculty partners to ensure any awards that not yet assigned can be awarded to an outstanding, deserving student in a timely manner.
Bursaries and need based awards
- Bursaries and need-based awards handled by Student Financial Assistance & Awards are awarded to students in early December after the completion of the bursary program adjudication.
- If we cannot find an eligible student in the bursary pool, we will work to find an eligible, deserving student over the remainder of the academic year as we continue to advise and work with students in financial need through our one-on-one advising appointments.
Year-end awards, prizes, and graduating awards
- Year-end awards, prizes, and graduating awards are awarded to students following the end of the Winter Session, normally in late May and early June.
