Bursaries

General Bursaries

Bursaries are non-repayable awards that are designed to help fill your "unmet need," which is the gap between assessed financial need and available government assistance. The General Bursary Program covers most bursaries available to UBC students. Please see the links (left) for several other University and government bursary programs.

Eligibility for general bursaries

  • You must have a student loan and unmet need for the same session as your bursary application.
  • You must apply for bursary by the deadline.
  • Enrolment must be confirmed on your student loans by the bursary deadline.
    • It is recommended that you apply for loans by June 30 for Winter Session bursaries and April 1 for Summer Session bursaries. If you apply for loans after these dates, you may still be eligible if your loan enrolment is confirmed by the bursary deadline.
  • Undergraduate, post baccalaureate programs are eligible, as well as graduate programs not designated as professional programs.
  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

Applications

  • Bursary application is separate from student loan applications.
  • For the Winter session, applications are due September 15 (available August 15).
  • For the Summer session, applications are due June 1 (available first week of classes in May).
  • The application is completed online at the Student Service Centre.

Receiving a bursary

A number of factors are considered when determining bursary awards:

How bursaries are calculated

  • Your unmet need.
  • The unmet need of other bursary applicants.
  • The eligibility of your program of studies and the bursary funding available for your program, as mandated by Policy 72.

Reasons for not receiving a bursary

  • Your bursary application was not submitted by the deadline.
  • Your enrolment was not confirmed on your student loan by the bursary deadline.
  • After the bursary calculation (above), you did not demonstrate fundable unmet need.

Bursary assistance may be available if financial circumstances have changed significantly since the bursary application and if these circumstances may prevent you from continuing studies. Please contact Student Financial Assistance and Awards for more information.

In addition to the General Bursary Program, students may apply to several other University and government bursary programs:
