Types of financial support

Student loans

A primary source of funding for many students is government student loans, which you apply to through your home province. If you are in a family with a lower income or if you have dependents, part of the funding you receive from the government may be in the form of a grant that you do not have to repay.

Not all students receiving band sponsorship are necessarily excluded from this type of funding. Applying is free and will help you find out how much you are eligible for. There are many debt management programs available when you enter repayment that allow you to pay back only what you can afford.

UBC bursaries

When you apply for a student loan, you can also apply for bursary through UBC’s General Bursary Program. UBC assesses your bursary application to determine if you have financial need that is not met by the maximum government assistance available from your home province. As with all bursaries, these are funds you don’t have to pay back.

Awards for Aboriginal Students

These awards include both scholarships (based on grades) and bursaries (based on financial need). The process is fairly easy – just read the short descriptions of the awards, check off the ones you feel you are eligible for, and provide proof of your Aboriginal heritage (Status Indian Card, Métis Card or formal letter from a recognized organization).
