Deferred standing exams

If you have been granted a Deferred Standing in a course requiring a final examination, you will be required to write your final exam during the official deferred examination periods set by Enrolment Services. These periods are late-July for Winter Session courses and mid-November for Summer Session courses.

Please note: some faculties and departments set alternate exam dates that differ from the official exam periods. Contact your instructor to find out if you will be required to write your exam at an earlier date.

Exam application information

The online Deferred Examination application will be open from April 1 to June 15 for Winter Session courses and September 1 to October 15 for Summer Session courses. Your exam will be scheduled within three weeks after the application closes.

How to apply to write your final exam

  1. Log in to the Student Service Centre

  2. Go to "Exams" and click "Exam Application."

You must submit a separate application for each Deferred Standing exam.
  3. Select the exam location from the list

The drop-down list on the application includes exam centres within British Columbia, as well as Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, and Hong Kong. The date, time, and location of the exam will be arranged by Enrolment Services. Please note that students writing an exam in Hong Kong will be assessed fees at the testing centre.
  4. If you are writing an exam in a location that is not listed, you must provide UBC with an acceptable exam invigilator.

  5. If your exam requires a payment, you must pay with Visa or Mastercard via the Student Service Centre.

  6. After completing the application, click the "Submit Application" button.

You will receive an email once your exam has been scheduled and you can view the exam date, time, and location on the exam application once this information has been determined. It is your responsibility to know where and when your exam is scheduled.

How to view your exam schedule

Your personalized examination information, including date, time, address, and room, will be available on the Student Service Centre under "Exam Schedule." Click the "Exam Application" tab, select the session from the drop-down menu and then click "View" beside each exam.

Invigilation information

Acceptable invigilators in Canada and the United States are University or College administrators or professors, public library staff, or RCMP members. The exam must be written at the invigilator's place of work. Invigilators cannot be a friend or family member of the test taker.

Outside of Canada and the United States, we will accept invigilators from Canadian Embassies and Consulates, or the British Council. The invigilator must speak fluent English. You may be asked to provide documentation to prove the person chosen is acceptable.

We require the invigilator's:

  • Full name
  • Personal phone number
  • Email address
  • Institution of employment
  • Work mailing address (home addresses and PO boxes are not accepted)
It is your responsibility to confirm with the invigilator that you can write the exam with them. UBC will review the invigilator information you input into the system to make sure they are an acceptable candidate. Once you get your exam date by email, you must confirm it with your invigilator and write the exam at the time scheduled.
