Print-based study
Print-based study is our correspondence model, which offers self-paced learning through the use of a course manual and, in some cases, supplementary material.
In print-based learning:
- Students study on their own with the guidance of a course instructor, who grades assignments and is available by phone or email for assistance.
- Courses usually extend beyond the regular UBC terms. There are fixed course start and end dates, and assignments are submitted according to a schedule.
- Students are required to have an email address to participate in distance courses to facilitate timely interactions between the student, University, and course instructor.
Online learning
Online learning takes advantage of the computer and internet to provide opportunities for students to interact with the instructor and fellow students online.
In online learning:
- Students are required to use a computer with suitable internet access. Online courses involve regularly logging in to the course website and may include online discussion and group work.
- Courses usually fall within the regular UBC terms. There are fixed course start and end dates and structured assignment schedules.
