Weekly placements in schools

Weekly placements in schools

One way you can make a difference is by making a positive and lasting impression on the lives of children and youth. Learn to lead by example. Share with others what you’ve learned in class and in your life.

What will I do?

In addition to serving as a role model, you could:

  • lead kids in games and after-school sports
  • help children learn to read so they can keep up in school
  • build children’s skills in math while increasing their enjoyment of the subject
  • work with schoolchildren to complete hands-on projects in the sciences and arts
  • advise children and youth on homework assignments

How much time is involved?

A minimum of two hours per week for a period of four to six months is required.

Where will I work?

You’ll work at an elementary or secondary school in East Vancouver. Visit our current list of school partners.

What will I learn?

Working with children and youth through the Trek Program, you will:

  • strengthen your critical thinking skills
  • gain experience working as part of a team
  • develop a better appreciation for diversity
  • learn strategies for teaching children and youth
  • discover what workplace environments you enjoy
  • increase your understanding of how relationships help children succeed in school
  • see how learning and teaching are connected
  • learn how you can be a global citizen by making a difference in your local community.

Who is well suited for a Trek Program school placement?

Students who are well-suited for the Trek Program are those who:

  • Enjoy working with children, like structured activities or events, are energetic, friendly, patient and flexible
  • Are looking for career-related work experience in areas such as teaching, social work, psychology, early childhood education and the creative arts

The program accepts students in September and January.
