The Faculty of Applied Science
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society of British Columbia (APSC 496)
- Students modified an android tablet computer to help people living with ALS to retrieve, hold and navigate readable content. The students also helped to develop software for this device.
- Byrne Creek Streamkeepers Society (CIVL 201/202)
- Students constructed a portable mechanical device designed to remove sediment from local creeks, in order to improve the success of salmon spawning.
- Vancouver General Hospital (CEEN 550)
- Students worked with Vancouver General Hospital to screen for approximately 50 cost and energy saving measures. Students also calculated potential carbon emission reductions.
The Faculty of Arts
- Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House (ANTH 409/SOCI 495)
- Students provided research assistance and support to programs offered by the Neighbourhood House, targeted towards recent immigrants to Canada; they performed various administrative tasks to help prepare the "Stories of Compassion Project"; and students assisted Frog Hollow in running a health conference for neighbourhood parents.
- Immigrant Services Society of BC (POLI 328A)
- Students served as mentors for recent immigrants. Activities included providing interactive ESL support and working with instructors, supporting life skills training, and planning and leading excursions to locations relevant to clients’ needs. They also engaged in a variety of activities pertaining to refugee sponsorship cases. Some students worked directly with particular clients, while others helped with logistical and research support for the counsellors.
- Indian Residential School Survivors Society (FNSP 400)
- The student studied global reconciliation processes and compared them with Canada’s Indian residential school system reconciliation process. The student suggested improvements to the current government process.
The Faculty of Commerce
- Alberni Community and Women's Services Society (COMM 462)
- Students developed an integrated marketing communications strategy to increase awareness about the agency’s goals and to enhance the effectiveness of its outreach and communication activities. Note: There were five instances of this project in COMM 462 during the 2010/11 academic year.
- Doig River First Nation (COHR 404)
- Students conducted research and brainstormed ideas to bridge the generation gap between older generations and youth in the Doig River First Nation. Their ideas were presented to the former Chief of the Doig River First Nation in class.
- West Coast School of Leadership and Management (BAIT 513)
- Students assessed the school’s current web and e-business presence, and provided recommendations on how to translate the exciting physical/emotional activities into a web-based environment that will showcase its unique offerings to potential clients. The Faculty of Human Kinetics
- AIDS Vancouver (HKIN 469)
- The students put on a health fair at the AIDS Vancouver Community Centre. The fair had several stations set up to increase awareness about health and exercise. The group also created information pamphlets that were on display at the centre.
- Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (HKIN 469)
- Students designed a workout manual that could be used by the physical educators at the facility when leading patients through an exercise session.
- Red Fox (HKIN 469)
- This group went out to Red Fox and participated in the various social and activity sessions to learn more about native communities in the downtown east side. The group then wrote a report documenting the importance of these types of programs and activities, which can be used by Red Fox to help secure further funding.
The Faculty of Land and Food Systems
- Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (LFS 350)
- Students designed promotional material for the for the Delta Farm & Wildlife Trust (such as brochures, posters, interactive classroom activities, and the outlines for a podcast/online video) and a survey about these materials to determine which type would be most effective.
- Gladstone Secondary (FNH 473)
- Students planned and ran a "Garden Fiesta" for Gladstone Secondary School's students to raise awareness of the school's garden and entice students to join their school's garden club.
- YWCA Vancouver (FNH 473)
- Students surveyed patrons of Crabtree Corner to help assess their needs and bridge cultural gaps between patrons and staff. The students conducted in-depth interviews and presented their findings to the staff.
