Supporting Place and Promise
Place and Promise, UBC’s new strategic plan, states that the University will "continue the rapid expansion of student housing, informal learning space, and on-campus work opportunities."
To this end, Classroom Services continues to support and guide initiatives that maximize the development and enhancement of informal learning spaces on campus.
- Classroom Services is working with the UBC Vancouver Informal Learning Space Committee (ILSC), chaired by the Vice-President, Students.
- Since its inception in 2001, the ILSC has partnered with private donors, student groups, and academic units to complete projects totaling approximately $20 million.
- Through collaboration with Facilities and Capital Planning, informal learning space is now embedded in the formal programming and design phases of academic learning space projects.
- The University Architect’s Office is leading the renewal of the UBC Vancouver public realm through the creation of the Public Realm Plan. This will create many beautiful new outdoor informal learning spaces on campus.
Mandate
The Informal Learning Space Committee - UBC Vancouver (ILSC) – guides the development and expansion of informal learning space on the Vancouver campus.
The committee works to:
- promote and identify opportunities for the development and enhancement of student social space and informal learning spaces
- prioritize requests for social and informal learning space improvements
- consult with university stakeholders (e.g., academic units, students, Land and Building Services) to ensure coordination and compatibility of projects and maximizing available resources
- develop multi-year plans for space improvements
- be informed on research related to student behaviours, needs and trends related to informal learning
- advise on allocation of resources

Funding
The guiding parameter of UBC Vancouver's ILSC is that the entire campus is a learning space, and the committee will provide funding along the following general guidelines:
- To maximize the return on funds, the ILSC will match project funding, typically dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $50,000 per project.
- The ILSC will review needs across campus before providing repeat funding to similar projects within previously funded areas.
The initiative has been made possible by the support of Land & Building Services, the Vice-President, Students, private donations, and academic and service units.
