Work Study & Work Learn
The Work Study/Work Learn Summer 2012 programs are coming soon!
This spring we are taking steps to move the project proposal process to a submission closing date model that offers an earlier and longer submission time period that also eliminates any date/time-stamp competition.
Project proposals can be submitted from March 9 to March 23 for Work Study/Work Learn Summer 2012 positions.
After the closing date, there will be a project proposal review period in which all submitted proposals will be reviewed in reference to the program requirements. Funding announcements will be sent out in the first week of April 2012 and the recruitment timeline will be expanded over the month of April in order for successful candidates to begin working in May 2012.
Creating Work Study and Work Learn positions for students
Want to receive a $9-per-hour wage subsidy to hire a qualified and energetic student for your lab or office? Create career-related, on-campus work positions for students through Work Study (for domestic students) and Work Learn (for international undergraduates).
Hiring a Work Study or Work Learn student
If you want to hire a student for the 2012 Summer Session (up to 20 hours per week from May to August, for a maximum of 300 hours for the term), you can submit project proposals beginning in March.
- Check the dates and eligibility criteria for the Summer program to see if you can participate.
- Review the Work Study and Work Learn Position Classification Guidelines (120KB PDF) and accurately classify your position.
- Apply for funding. You can submit your request once the program opens in March 2012.
- Review applications and interview candidates. Positions granted funding will be automatically posted on CareersOnline, for students to review and apply.
- Hire your student and submit the Student Staff Appointment e-form. You will be responsible for paying their full wages up front, and UBC will reimburse you on a quarterly basis.
- Review your responsibilities to support your students' learning.
Timelines and details for the Winter 2012/2013 program will be posted in April.

Benefits of hiring a Work Study or Work Learn student
Place and Promise: The UBC Plan makes a commitment to provide students with enriched educational opportunities, and faculty and staff with the means to fulfill UBC's vision, values and commitments.
Work Study and Work Learn support these commitments by enabling you to:
- Obtain qualified, energetic support at a subsidized rate
- Support student involvement in the campus community
- Enhance students' educational experience by developing career-related skills and experience
- Help students offset the cost of their education
- Bring international students and international perspectives to your work environment through Work Learn
Work Study and Work Learn Update: For several years now, supervisors and students have been asking for guaranteed funding for approved positions. In response, we introduced a new process for Work Study/Work Learn that prevents an opportunity being posted, a student being found for the role, and then the position not moving forward because the funding had already run out. With the new approach, funding is guaranteed for approved positions and wait-listed positions have a better chance of being funded.
The entire Work Study/Work Learn fund is being distributed in two phases this year. The second phase of funding will be allocated to 320 positions over the next two weeks. Rather than strictly following a first-come, first-served model, distribution of positions across the campus, historical funding of positions, and alignmentwith the strategic commitments of Place and Promise will be taken into consideration. We will provide you with the funding status of your wait-listed position(s) by September.
Beginning in mid-August, UBC faculties and departments can submit project proposals for wage subsidy funding for the Winter 2011/2012 session.
