Canada Summer Jobs
UBC faculties and departments can get a wage subsidy to hire a student this summer through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applications for Summer 201
Eligibility
Public and private-sector employers (which includes most UBC faculties and departments) are eligible to receive a subsidy for up to 50 per cent of the provincial/territorial adult minimum hourly wage. Not-for-profit employers on campus are eligible for a subsidy of up to 100 per cent. The minimum wage in BC is currently
Jobs must be full-time (30 to 40 hours per week) and six to 16 weeks in duration.
Applying for a Canada Summer Jobs subsidy
Step 1: Review the information on the Canada Summer Jobs website
- Read the Canada Summer Jobs 20
1 2 applicant guide. - Review the assessment criteria and point system that Service Canada uses to assess applications. Does your application meet the following?
- Employer and student eligibility
- Position conditions
- Amount of wage subsidy
- Application deadlines (the earliest and latest project start and end dates)
Step 2: Is the position union or non-union?
- Determine whether your proposed position is non-union or union. If you are unsure, consult with your Human Resources advisor to assess whether the proposed scope of duties falls within the CUPE 116 or CUPE 2950 bargaining units.
- CUPE 116 bargaining unit: the rate of pay to the student must be $16.94/hour
- CUPE 2950 bargaining unit: the rate of pay to the student must be $16.16/hour
- If your position is union, answer "yes" to question number 7 on the application form. If your position is non-union, answer "no." Service Canada requires a union concurrence letter for union positions. The University will seek to acquire union approval and submit it to Service Canada on your behalf.
Step 3: Complete the application form
- Complete the online or paper application form. Once completed, save or print out a copy before submitting it to Service Canada. After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation number.
- You will need the following UBC-specific information to complete the form:
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) registration number – UBC's CRA number is 108161779RP0001
- Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) account and/or other applicable liability insurance account number – UBC's WCB account number is 011284 AQ and the rate is 0.
18 - The number of employees in your organization – UBC has 13,600 employees
- The date your organization began operations – UBC began operations September 15, 1915
Step 4: Submit your application for approval
- Submit your application to Service Canada directly (at this point without the union concurrence letter) before the February 2
9 , 201 2 , deadline. - Forward a copy of your application to Career Services so we are aware of your request for funding and can submit your position description to Human Resources and the unions for approval on your behalf. Forward the copy, along with the confirmation number, to UBC Career Services. Clearly indicate if your position is union or non-union.
Step 5: Wait for approvals
- We will acquire union approval after the application deadline, when all applications have been submitted to Service Canada. UBC Career Services will inform you if and when union approval is received.
- Service Canada will contact you if your position has been approved and send you any necessary documentation and forms.
Getting approval from Human Resources and the unions generally takes one to two months. You will then require additional time for Service Canada approval.
Step 6: Hire and pay a student
- If you don't have a student in mind for your position, advertise the position on the employer portal on UBC CareersOnline. UBC employers can post their jobs for free. Make sure your posting:
- Indicates in the job title that it is a Canada Summer Job position
- Includes student eligibility criteria in the qualifications section (to ensure you get applications only from eligible students)
- Appoint your student (on an hourly basis) by submitting a Student Appointment Form to UBC Payroll.
- Ensure your student gets paid by submitting timesheets. Keep accurate and detailed copies of these timesheets because you will need to provide them to Service Canada when you submit your claim
in order to receive your wage subsidy.
Step 7: Collect your wage subsidy
- Pay your student's full wage first.
- Submit your claim form (sent to you by Service Canada).
- You'll then receive a cheque from Service Canada for your wage subsidy.

If you or your student do not meet all of the eligibility criteria or position conditions outlined on the Canada Summer Jobs website, Service Canada will not process your wage subsidy cheque.
