Arts Internship Program

What is the Arts Internship Program?

The Arts Internship Program offers undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts opportunities to gain part-time unpaid work experience in a variety of work places. The internship program is currently seeking host organizations who are interested in creating short-term, part-time unpaid positions for Arts students.

Arts students major in over 26 different programs in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Creative and Performing Arts, and bring a broad range of skills, talents, and experience to the work place.

Internships are typically three to four months in duration and between 8 to 12 hours per week, depending on the needs of the employer and availability of the student.

Why hire an Arts intern?

  1. You will gain a skilled and motivated student to support or enhance your organization's work.
  2. Interns can provide support to special projects, events and daily tasks and fill short-term staffing needs.
  3. An Arts intern can bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and knowledge of recent trends, research, and technology.

Who are the interns?

Interns are UBC Vancouver students in the Faculty of Arts from a wide range of studies in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine and Performing Arts fields. Students can participate in an internship after completing their first year in the Faculty of Arts.

What are the requirements for an internship position?

  • Positions are between 8 to 12 hours per week, from 4 to 8 months
  • Positions offer a challenging work environment where the student has ownership of tasks or projects
  • Positions are supervised, with opportunities for coaching and feedback on the student’s performance
  • Students work in a professional setting, with opportunities to interact with other staff and/or volunteers on a regular basis
  • Positions are reviewed & approved by the Arts Internship Coordinator

What is the cost to my organization?

All internships are unpaid positions and there’s no cost to posting your opportunity with us, or having us send you applicants.

To help an intern be successful, you will need to provide some basic training to the student at the start of the internship, and offer them ongoing supervision, coaching and feedback during the internship.

As positions are unpaid and designed for students, it is expected that any expenses incurred by the intern in fulfilling work-related duties, apart from the costs of commuting to and from the workplace, will be covered by the host organization.

Tips for recruiting an intern

  • Create a detailed and specific internship description to attract candidates to your role - students will want to know their roles and the benefits of working with your organization.
  • As students will be applying to multiple opportunities at the same time, try to complete the selection process early to ensure that you get your first choice of candidates.

When should I post an internship position?

There are two internship sessions. The first session runs from November to April, and the second runs from May to August. Deadlines for position descriptions are in early September and early March.
