"F" Word campaign

F Word campaign buttons

The "F" Word is "feminism."

In 2006, Access & Diversity, in cooperation with the Women's and Gender Studies Undergraduate Program and the Centre for Women and Gender Studies, launched the "F" Word campaign to commemorate International Women's Day at UBC.

The concept was first developed by students at Iowa State University who wanted to educate the university community about feminism. According to them, fear and lack of understanding about what feminism means have deterred many women from defining themselves as feminists.

"F" Word buttons come with a card that explains the meaning of feminism. If you believe in the tenets of feminism and want to show your support by wearing a button, email CJ Rowe at cj.rowe@ubc.ca.

I am a feminist because:

  • I act to end all forms of inequality based on gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, race, ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic status.
  • I challenge systems and ideas that reproduce inequalities.
  • I am committed to individual choice and self-determination.
  • I strive to create an environment where it is safe to question the status quo.
  • I am continually challenging my own privileged positions.
