Accessible washrooms

Using a washroom is something that most people take for granted. But for people who are gender-variant, using the washroom can be a source of anxiety. The washroom is a place where they may face embarrassment, harassment, and violence.
The Access & Diversity Advisory Council established an Accessible Washrooms Committee, which conducted an audit of single-stall washroom facilities on the UBC Point Grey campus during the summer of 2006.
We audited washrooms to check for accessibility to people with disabilities, people who are gender-variant, and people with young children. All single-stall washrooms were audited, including those in private and staff-only areas. The audit focused on issues of physical and psychological safety, signage, equipment and fixtures, location, traffic volume, proximity to other facilities, and physical accessibility.
