This day of remembrance was initially created to honour Rita Hester, a transgendered woman who was violently murdered in November 1998. Her murder, like many other anti-transgender murders, has yet to be solved.

In the last decade, more than one person has been killed each month due to hatred and prejudice.

We wear this button to memorialize all those who have died due to anti-transgender violence and to show support for all forms of self-defined gender identity and expression.
