Stereotypes Don't Define Us

The campaign “Stereotypes Don’t Define Us” was created to promote an inclusive community by challenging the pervasiveness of stereotypes in our everyday lives. Our springboard was the infamous Maclean’s article, “Too Asian”, which launched the UBC campus into a dialogue about racism and stereotyping. From there, the Equity Ambassadors started our own project that expanded the conversation to include stereotypes of all kinds.
The Equity Ambassadors want to reveal that stereotypes can be damaging to individuals, which only serves to create an exclusive living, studying, and working environment. Stereotyping occurs frequently and can manifest itself in various forms. Not all prejudices are obvious to the speaker or the receiver and, furthermore, not all discrimination takes the form of racism, sexism, sizeism, ageism, etc... Individuals can also be marginalized by way of assumptions or preconceived ideas.
The Equity Ambassadors wish to challenge you. If you were asked to fill in the statement “I am ___, and I am (not)___”, what would it reveal?
