We live in a society in which the artifacts of popular culture display a clear-cut image of what we should look like. The Equity Ambassadors acknowledge the superficiality of these messages and are determined to break down the false conceptions that they breed. We want to find the truth about the human form.

The Body Project seeks to promote awareness of the reality of diverse body types across cultures, genders, heights, weights, and everything in between. It also encourages a truthful and representational definition of what it means to be beautiful.

In a survey conducted in concurrence with the Body Project, UBC students confirmed the powerful influence of media messages on personal body awareness. Results of the survey revealed that the "ideal" body type places considerable pressure on students to look a certain way.

In order to complete our mission to represent a realistic body image – inclusive of all shapes and sizes – we asked the campus community to submit images of their own authentic anatomy. Each of these diverse expressions of "self" was integrated to create a multi-layered collage of the human form.

We hope that everyone will continue to embrace human diversity and give voice to the beauty that exists in every individual.
