Peer tutoring

peer tutoring

Access & Diversity operates a peer tutoring program for registered students with disabilities. The program runs from October 1 to April 30 each year. The program matches clients with a peer tutor for one-to-one tutoring on a weekly basis for an approved number of hours. There is no charge for the program.

Strategic Content Learning (SCL)

The tutoring program uses the SCL approach which emphasizes effective learning and study strategies rather than focusing on course content or completing specific assignments or tasks. The SCL method is a collaborative process between a tutor and student. It requires both reflection and active participation by the student in developing successful strategies.

Access & Diversity hires UBC students to provide peer tutoring and trains them in the SCL method. Tutors are matched with clients who have a similar academic focus so that they can understand the tasks and challenges of their clients.

Areas of tutoring

Areas of tutoring focus include:

  • notetaking
  • memory retention and retrieval
  • exam preparation and test-taking strategies
  • study skills
  • reading and writing skills
  • time management

The tutoring is expected to take place on campus in a public facility, such as group study areas in libraries, open classrooms, and student lounges.

Applying to the program

If you are registered with Access & Diversity and are interested in tutoring, please meet with your Diversity Advisor – Disability to get an application form to apply to the program. Application forms should be submitted at the outset of the Term 1 and can be renewed for continuation in Term 2, or a new form can be completed for each term.

The tutoring program does not run in the spring and summer. Consult with your Diversity Advisor – Disability for other options.
