Academic concessions

The Access & Diversity office in Brock Hall.
If you are requesting academic concessions for disability-related reasons, please contact Access & Diversity in a timely manner. If your request for an academic concession is due to an illness not related to your disability, an accident, or a family affliction, you need to contact your faculty advising office.
Medical documentation
Your request for an academic concession should be accompanied by medical documentation. The medical documentation will remain in the Access & Diversity office and will not be shared with other units on campus, except in cases of appeals.
Recommendations for academic concessions
Access & Diversity makes its recommendations regarding academic concessions to the appropriate faculty advising office or contact. The final decision rests with the faculty advising office or contact.
Where applicable, your request for a standing deferral for disability-related reasons must be accompanied by a completed faculty Standing Deferral Form.
For information on your faculty's procedures and position on academic concessions, contact your faculty advising office or visit your faculty website – for example, the Arts Academic Advising website or the UBC Science Advising website.
Access & Diversity does not make any recommendations regarding refunds in cases of course withdrawal.
Reasons why requests may be refused
The University regards academic concessions as a privilege, not a right. Repeated requests for an academic concession will not be granted. Furthermore, a request for an academic concession may be refused if:
- You have already written the final exam for that course.
- You have not been attending class regularly.
- You have not completed a sufficient amount of the coursework (including mid-term exams).
- You have not made a request in a timely manner.
Access & Diversity will not support selective retroactive withdrawal requests. Only in exceptional circumstances will requests for complete term withdrawals be considered for recommendation to the appropriate faculty.
