The Crane Library Volunteer Program offers a unique and challenging opportunity. Volunteers narrate and digitally record course reading materials and textbooks for faculty, staff, and students with visual, print, or learning disabilities. Textbooks are read from all areas of study and academic levels. There are always new, diverse, and interesting materials to read.

The program includes an audition, an orientation, a training session, and a feedback phases. These are delivered in a range of forms, including peer group workshops and one-on-one mentoring.

The Crane Library production space includes eight digital audio recording booths and an open-concept work area that offers access to staff support and a space to meet fellow volunteers.

Crane Library Volunteers can take a break in the volunteer lounge or reception area, and they have access to free hot and cold beverages, such as filtered water, coffee, hot chocolate, and a variety of teas. There is also a fridge and microwave.

Ideally, volunteers should be:

  • able to commit to a weekly two-hour shift
  • computer literate beyond a beginner level
  • fluent in English
  • able to read university-level material
  • have a willingness to learn new techniques

Auditions are available year-round by appointment and take about 30 minutes to complete. Narrators must be able to read without rehearsal.
